My Neighbor Totoro by nishi My Neighbor Totoro by nishi
Completed! :3

And I didn't know there were already so many on DA... I was lucky enough to come across a lot of Totoro merchandise while making this so I got some ideas about how to do the ears and whiskers and all else.
I also felt like including all the different ones on DA since there were so many different ways to go about it:

[link] (The ear flaps! :D)
[link] (I think they used a sewing machine... and better material! 8D)
[link] (They included his stomach and markings!)
[link] (Another with ear flaps! :3)
[link] (I can't crochet... more power to 'em!)
[link] (I love the big shiny eyes!)
[link] (Actual fur material! :B)
[link] (Knitting seems to keep the ears up better.)
[link] (This one looks a lot like mine, actually!)
[link] (I got the idea of adding a tail from this one when I found out the brim wasn't long enough)

truthfully, the only hat on your list in the artist comments that looks halfway good is the super awesome last one with the tail! otherwise, yours tops the rest =)

It's made of felt. Fleece would've been softer. X3

The pattern? You mean for the basic shape of the hat?
And I sewed the eyes on there. 8D

I'm still confused... it's not specific. X3
You divide the hat in four pieces, I put the felt on top of one of the four pieces, where I thought it looked right. I used white thread and sewed along the border of the shape, attaching the white and grey felt. The black pupils are little sticky velcro things you can buy in craft stores - the back end is sticky so I just pressed it on.

Hehe, woo! I remember our talks about the hat! :3 I'm glad ya think it turned out okay!
I guess a number of things kept me away from the dark felt. :B But I saw some others that used lighter felt for Totoro things and they looked okay to me, and the darker felt is a little more than twice as thick as what I use, so I wasn't sure how prepared I was to use that when it came to the ears and brim... so I went the easy path. 8D
I think he looks cute though! If I do end up making another one for someone, I think using darker felt (once I have some experience with it) will be a better choice. :D

ahh, yeah that can make things a little more difficult if the material is thicker D:

Super stalker skills!! And also the ur bedsheets are black/white/grey squares.. Theres a manga on the top and bottom of the shelf.. I assume they're dotHack? Also on the 2nd panel on the right I see some red letters "s" and "h".. Is it Nishi?

The bed stand next to my bed? :B Nope!
The book on top is Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (And So Can You!)" and on the bottom there isn't a book - it's a packaged G.I. Joe that my dad bought on Ebay, since I used to play with G.I. Joes as a kid and it was my favorite guy, but this one isn't destroyed. 8D
I could hardly see the s and h - but actually those are packaged pillow covers I haven't put to use yet. It says "Plush" on them, you creepy stalker you. 8D
...Well it's flattering you'd look into it really. :B

Totoro...wow, I remember him. It seems like ages ago.

This is amazing, how long does something like this usually take?
Reply
:iconnishi:
nishi Featured By Owner Sep 11, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Not too long. :3 I think I can whip up a normal hat in just a day if I stay focused. :3 But all the features and especially the ears slow me down a bit, and that slows everything down a bit more, so it ends up being more like 3-4 days.
But I wasn't working on this one most days so it took a while longer. 8D

Holy carp! carps on a stick!

Oxxy this is so good! My sister and I are serious Totoro fans (our bathroom is decked out in totoro stuff, from toilet lid to the foot towel and hand towels, etc) since thats one of our fave movies ever... and we're really picky about how totoro is perceived by others. And honestly, your version really captures his look to the T. I really love the tail bit too! :D Great super tremendous job done!!!!

Wee, wow, a whole paragraph of fun! :3 That's so cool you guys have a themed bathroom, especially one of such a neat character! (: And I know what ya mean - as much as personal style is neat, I think for these projects keeping it to something recognizeable is what makes it so fun, so I tried to stay as loyal as possible. :3 Haha, I was interested in the idea after seeing someone else make it, but when I accidentally cut the brim an inch and a half short the tail seemed like destiny! :D Thank you so much!

LOL.

Yeah we're a bit obsessed >_> Even have like 5 Totoro puzzles (3 of which haven't been completed), fans, dolls.. A ha.....

If you ever make it again, I'd suggest the big totoro with the wee lil white one on top of his head (kind of how like the others put a leaf on his head). :D

I applaud your strategic use of mirrors! This hat is very well done -- definitely a strong contender if all those other hats were... like... competing.
Reply
:iconnishi:
nishi Featured By Owner Sep 11, 2008  Professional Digital Artist
Hehe, no competition! :3 The other felt ones used better materials than I did, and the hand-sewn or stitched or crocheted ones are too different to be seen the same way... but I wanted to show how some included his belly, whiskers, his smile, or the leaf, all the different kind of ears, colors, and materials... there were so many ways to go about it since there wasn't any specific way to make a hat of him! :3
Oh, but the mirror was an accident I liked. Thank you very much! :D
